Good Guys Wear Black: The Real-Life Heroes of the Police's Rapid-Response Firearm Unit
Published in Hardcover by Random House Uk Ltd (August, 1997)
Author: Steve Collins
Average review score:

A young boy's dream
I started out with Andy Mcnab and Chris Ryan. But then I wanted to read something about the minor wars that take place in our own backyard. Heroes are born on the battlefield they say. I dont think i agree anymore, not after reading this book. The worst thing is that we take the men and women in uniform for granted. We dont know what they do at night, or whos life they are saving. Why??? Cause we dont want to know. But one thing is for sure. They are out there every night, risking their life so that you could sleep safe at night. Reading Good guys were black gave me goosebumps and many sleepless nights. Its like when you was a young kid. Playing cops and robber on the backyard. But there is a huge line between now and then. I would like to call that line adrenalin, pain and blood. And from the first page to the last I was hooked. To read about Steves experience on the beat, makes my lips to curve up at both sides. But every time I finished a page,I realizing that this is not a fiction. This is the real thing.

Guerrilla Radio: Rock 'N' Roll Radio and Serbia's Underground Resistance
Published in Paperback by Thunder's Mouth Press / Nation Books (July, 2002)
Author: Matthew Collin
Average review score:

An outspoken voice against the genocidal Serbian dictator
Guerrilla Radio by Matthew Collin (London Editor of "The Big Issue") is the incredible but true story of the Serbian pirate radio station B92. This was an unlicensed radio broadcast station which began in the late 1980's for the simple purpose of playing music, but it quickly evolved into become an outspoken voice against the genocidal Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic. A powerful story of people's refusal to be silenced, culminating with the eventual end of Milosevic's regime in October 2000, Guerilla Radio is a strongly recommended and revealing example of the determination of human will and spirit against all efforts to shut it down, disrupt its broadcasts, and otherwise silence an underground resistance to an horrific tyranny.

A Guide to the Study and Use of Military History
Published in Paperback by University Press of the Pacific (April, 2000)
Authors: John E. Jessup, Robert W. Coakley, and James Lawton Collins
Average review score:

A welcome introduction
For those wishing to study military history, either seriously or for their own benefit this is a great work to start with. A chronological by subject discussion and listing of the principle texts of military history in the english language. While this could use an update to cover more recent history, you will find nothing better or more recent available to you. This book is not only informative, but readable as well. It is also great for those with some knowledge of military history who wish to branch out into other areas of the field.

A Hamlet Teacher's Must-have
It is hard to know what you're getting just from the explanation on this site but I bought the CD anyway. I am ever so glad I did because this is going to be so helpful for both myself and my students. Whether you're teaching a full month or only a week on "Hamlet", this guide gives you invaluable tools. And the ages of your students shouldn't matter because there is something on this CD to fit every level. If you're pressed for time like I am, the lesson plans, quizzes, etc. will help. It's an extraordinary deal for such a low price and I urge everyone to try a copy!

The Harper Collins Book of Prayers
Published in Hardcover by Book Sales (May, 1997)
Authors: Robert Van De Weyer and Robert Van de Weyer
Average review score:

An excellent resource for stimulating personal prayer
Van De Weyer first gathered these prayers for his personal prayer times, and the selections reflect his concern for the devotional life. The compendium includes the prayers of church leaders(Clement of Rome, Clement of Alexandria, several Anglican leaders), mystics (John of the Cross, Theresa of Avila), theologians (Bede, Augustine), authors (John Donne), liturgies (Book of Common Prayer) and people of action (Dag Hammerskjold). The names in this review are a mere sample; there are several hundred sources in the book. His sources are primarily Catholic, but he does not neglect the Protestant and Orthodox traditions. He also includes a few prayers from non-Christian traditions, such as Judaism, Islam, and Aztec and African monotheistic traditions.

The prayers include some of the most famous in Christian literature (Augustine's line about the heart not finding rest until it finds God is in here) and are intensely personal. Van De Weyer did a good job of selecting prayers for all occasions: feeling weak, feeling in need of forgiveness, expressing gratitude, desiring justice, contemplating the meaning of life--they're all there.

Van De Weyer includes a helpful one or two sentence biography of each source. This is important if you want to feel a connectedness to the people who have lived the spiritual quest before you, as I do.

This is not an academic book, and it is not designed for those who believe that spirituality cannot be discovered from within (rather than from outside of) the Christian tradition. It may also run against the grain of the American self-help religion. But if you want to drink from the wells of the Christian spiritual tradition, you will satisfy your thirst over and over again as you meditate upon the passages in this book.

Harper Collins French Dictionary/French-English English-French
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (August, 1990)
Author: Henry H., Jr. Collins
Average review score:

The most useful French-English dictionary EVER!
As a French high school teacher, I have the opportunity to compare French-English dictionaries with my students - and the Harper Collins softcover version is better every time. More accurate, complete with full expressions and all the synonyms you could hope for. Any time that I go to this dictionary, I always come away with the feeling that I got EXACTLY the word or expression I was looking for - and I never got that from any other dictionary I've used! I use it on a daily basis, and it's so well-thumbed that I may need a new one! I heartily recommend it to serious students of French.

Harper Collins Pocket Portuguese Dictionary
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (15 January, 2002)
Author: HarperCollins
Average review score:

O Melhor Diccionario No Mercado!
What do Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Sao Tome e Principe, East Timor, Macao, Guinea-Bissau, Goa, Diu, and parts of New England (U.S.A.) have in common? Well, if you didn't know already, these nations and territories encompass the Portuguese-speaking world, and if you are looking for an excellent, well-researched Portuguese-English dictionary on the market,Harper-Collins' Portuguese-English dictionary is simply the best one out on the market.

Recently revised and redesigned into a handy, pocket-size edition, dictionary offers the best coverage on Portuguese vocabulary, grammar, and structure that other famous foreign-language dictionaries such as Lagenscheidt and Oxford have never been able to grasp. The book, which is in a condensed collegiate edition, is great for its' classification of usage (e.g. it distinguishes words used in Brazil vs. those used in Portugal), and the book's overall design is excellent. Other dictionaries don't take the time and organization in clearly stating where each word is used in the Portuguese-speaking world, and unless you're well known with Lusitanian and Brazilian norms, then not including this classification will make it more difficult when learning or using the language.

If you need the best Portuguese-English dictionary on the market, then you have found it! Somente o melhor dicionario no mercado!

Harpercollins Russian Dictionary: Russian English English Russian
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (January, 1995)
Authors: HarperCollins, Harper Collins, and Marina Hepburn
Average review score:

Very Good Russian/English Dictionary
This is a very good Russian/English Dictionary. It provides information on inregular conjugations and declensions. It is very thorough, and includes pronounciation and grammar information. The only deficit to this dictionary is it sometimes takes a while to find an entry since there are so many of them.

Hiding
Published in School & Library Binding by Penguin USA (Juv) (May, 1994)
Authors: Dorothy Aldis and Heather Collins
Average review score:

Both my children and I absolutely adore this book!
This book is "interactive" because children can't help but look for for the "little" boy who is hiding in these beautifully illustrated pictures, rich in color and detail. The text contents are a few simple, ryming sentences which makes the book equally loved by a two-year-old, or five-year-old. We have read many children's books, and I am surprised I have not heard of this one. We found it one day in the library, and we just had to have our own copy! Your children will LOVE this book! And so will you.
